Fatima 100

Very first letter from Sister Lucia on the apparitions and the devotion to the Immaculate Heart of Mary.

After nine months as a postulant, Sister Lucia was sent to the convent at Tuy to complete her noviciate.  There, she had Father Aparicio as confessor.  At the end of a year-and-a-half, Father Aparicio, convinced that the apparitions at Pontevedro were of interest, asked her to describe them in writing, underlining the relation between the devotion to the Immaculate Heart and the apparitions at Fatima.  This last request plunged Sister Lucia into a state of confusion, because to comply with it meant that she would have to reveal a part of the secret of Fatima.  The apparitions at Pontevedra made no explicit reference to this secret :  she could therefore speak freely.  But Father Aparicio’s question obliged her to reveal that the devotion to the Immaculate Heart of Mary was also one of the elements of the secret.

On the 17th of December 1927, while she was praying in front of the tabernacle, Jesus authorised her to reveal to her confessor the part of the secret concerning the devotion to the Immaculate Heart of Mary.  As she had shown an aversion to writing in the first person singular, Father Aparicio suggested she write in the third person.

This letter is particularly important, because it is the very first document we have from Sister Lucia about the apparitions with which she was favoured, and of the message which had been confided to her.  In this letter, Sister Lucia only makes the connection with the revelations of the 13th of June and says nothing of those of the 13th of July, which the Holy Virgin had particularly asked that she keep secret.

Here is what she wrote at the request of Father Aparicio (all bold and underlined words are ours) :

17-12-1927, she placed herself close to the tabernacle to ask Jesus how to satisfy the request that had been made of her, and if the origin of the devotion to the Immaculate Heart of Mary was included in the secret that had been confided to her by the Most Holy Virgin. Jesus, in a clear voice, made her listen to these words : « My daughter, write what is asked of you, and also write down everything that the Most Holy Virgin revealed to you in the apparition when she spoke of this devotion. As for the rest of the secret, maintain your silence ». What was confided to her about this subject in 1917 is the following : she [Lucia] asked that they [her two cousins] could be taken to Heaven. The Most Holy Virgin replied : « Yes, as for Francisco and Jacinta, I will take them to Heaven in a little while ; but as for you, you will stay down here for longer. Jesus wants to use you to make me known and loved. He wants to establish the devotion to my Immaculate Heart throughout the world. He promises salvation to whoever embraces it. These souls will be loved by God  like flowers that I have placed to adorn His throne ». « Will I stay here all alone ? » she asked sadly. « No, my daughter. I will never abandon you ; my Immaculate Heart will be your refuge and the path which will lead you to God ».

10-12-1925, the Most Holy Virgin appeared to her, and beside Her, borne on a luminous cloud, was the Child Jesus.

The Most Holy Virgin put Her hand on her shoulder and at the same time, showed her a heart surrounded by thorns that She held in Her other hand.

That same instant, the Child Jesus said to her : « Have compassion for the Heart of your Most Holy Mother, covered with thorns which ungrateful men continually drive into It, without anyone making an act of reparation in order to remove them."

Then the Most Holy Virgin said to her : « See, my daughter, my Heart surrounded by thorns and continually pierced by ungrateful men with their blasphemies and ingratitude. You, at least, try to console me, and announce that for all those who, for five months, on the 1st Saturday, confess, receive Holy Communion, recite the Rosary, and keep me company for 15 minutes while meditating on the 15 mysteries of the Rosary with the intention of removing these thorns from me, I promise to help them at the hour of their death with all the necessary graces for the salvation of their souls. »

15-2-1926

15-2-1926, The Child Jesus appeared to her again. He asked if she had yet made public the devotion to His Most Holy Mother. She told him her confessor (Don Lino Garcia) had some difficulties and that the Mother Superior was ready to promote the devotion, but that the confessor had said that she could not do anything on her own. Jesus replied : « It’s true that by herself your Superior cannot do anything, but with my grace, she can do everything. »

She put forth the difficulty that many souls had in confessing on the Saturday and asked that confession within the week be valid. Jesus replied : « Yes. And even more so, if in a state of grace when receiving me, and with the intention of removing the thorns from the Immaculate Heart of Mary. » She asked : « My Jesus ! And those who forget to form this intention ? » Jesus replied : « They can form it at the following confession, taking the first opportunity they have to confess. »

Thus, at the end of 1927, ten years after the apparitions, for the first time in the history of Fatima, at the request of her confessor and with the authorisation of Heaven, Sister Lucia revealed one of the components of the message of Fatima : the will of God to establish in the world the devotion to the Immaculate Heart of Mary, and what these devotions involved. She would probably have done this sooner if Mgr. da Silva had not asked her to keep the secret when he saw her for the first time in 1921. On the other hand, the rest of the secret would be kept for several more years to come.
