N° 72 : The organisation of living rosaries

Newsletter n°72 (4 April 2018, 3rd anniversary of Cap Fatima)

Dear friends,

Today, Cap Fatima celebrates its 3rd anniversary.  The idea of organising something to celebrate, in the most fitting way possible, the centenary of the apparitions at Fatima, was launched three years ago, on the 4th of April 2015 (which was a First Saturday of the month).   (See the introductory newsletter.)  At this time, nothing concrete was decided, but it seemed a shame not to take advantage first of the First Saturdays of the month in the centenary to launch the project, entrusting to Providence the care of outlining the specifics when it saw fit.  Little by little, ideas grew and activities were put into place:  the newsletters beginning in May 2015, consecrations to the Immaculate Heart beginning in November 2015, the series of First Saturdays of the month in 2017, a letter of support to Cardinal Burke in the summer of 2017 for his activity regarding the consecration of Russia to the Immaculate Heart of Mary, etc.

Initially, it was envisioned that the project would finish at the end of 2017.  However, faced with the number of people who asked to continue receiving the newsletter, it was decided to keep it going for another year or two.  How long will it last?  Heaven only knows.  We will trust in Providence to tell us when the time comes.  Be that at is may, continuing with the pr

N° 66 : Cap Fatima continuation

Newsletter n°66 (31 December 2017)

Dear friends,

This newsletter, the last of 2017, will be rather special.  Initially, when we launched the Cap Fatima project in April 2015, it was planned that it should end after the centenary of the apparitions, in other words, at the end of 2017.  This letter should therefore have been the last.  But many of you have been very keen for the publication of this letter to continue.  All credit due, it’s true that 2017 should not be an ending, but a beginning.  It’s entirely possible to pursue all the activities which had been foreseen for the centenary (see newsletters n°1 and n°38) after 2017.

Moreover, some people have believed that this would be the case.  A parish which hadn’t been able to do all they wished for the centenary has decided to do it during 2018, declaring it a “Marial year” for the parish.  The consecration of the parish to the Immaculate Heart of Mary is planned;  three Pilgrim Virgin Statues of Our Lady of Fatima are making the rounds between the families, etc.

N° 67 : Loving the Rosary

Newsletter n°67 (17 January 2017)

Dear friends,

Many of you have encouraged us to continue the activity begun in April 2015, the aim of which was to contribute to the celebration of the centenary of the apparitions at Fatima.  Due to lack of time, we have not always been able to reply individually to all those who have supported us and given us helpful suggestions.  We would like to express our gratitude to them, and our most sincere thanks.

We will therefore continue in the same spirit.  There is no longer an objective to reach, as the centenary is now over, but a direction to follow.  We will stay on the same road, or as sailors say, keep to the same course.  This is why the name will remain “Cap Fatima”.  We have passed a position on the map of our pilgrimage on this earth and we continue on our route towards Heaven.  On the 13th of June 1917, Our Lady said to Lucia:  “My Immaculate Heart will be the way which will lead you to God”, so we will continue our way on this earth with the Immaculate Heart as our guide.  Hence the new citation in the heading of the website:  On the way to Heaven with the Immaculate Heart of Mary.

N° 65 : Sacrifices asked for by Heaven (continued)

Newsletter n°65 (17 December 2017)

Dear friends,

In the last newsletter, we looked at three points:

  • there are voluntary penances (which we impose on ourselves) and sufferings to which we are subjected,
  • both can be offered either in reparation for our sins, or for the conversion of sinners,
  • Heaven has asked us above all to offer the sufferings we are subjected to for the conversion of sinners.

While it’s obvious that we shouldn’t neglect voluntary penances, there are many people who don’t have enough courage or willpower to set themselves penances.  On the other hand, we can’t avoid involuntary suffering, which is inevitable in this world.  The latter are more commendable if we accept them and offer them up, as we do not choose them.  For many, life on this earth is just one long combat and a painful martyrdom.  We shouldn’t complain, because all the sacrifices that life asks of us every day can be ways to salvation, as much for us as for our neighbour, sinners in particular.  And it is precisely these sacrifices that Our Lord and the Angel came to request for our times, affirming that in offering them we would save sinners:

N°71 : The Living Rosary

Newsletter n°71 (17 March 2018)

Dear friends,

The two principal requests from the Fatima message are to say the Rosary every day for peace in the world (see newsletters n°35 and n°59) and to offer the sacrifices of our daily lives for the conversion of sinners (see newsletters n°6 and n°7).  Helping those who have trouble saying the Rosary should therefore be a preoccupation as important as praying for the conversion of sinners.  While being aware of the importance of the Rosary, many people have difficulties in saying it every day.  This should not surprise us unduly:  Sister Lucia often warned that the devil makes war against the Rosary.  For example, in December 1917, she spoke to her friend, Mother Martins, of “the insistence with which she [Our Lady] recommended we pray the Rosary.  For she already knew that these times would come in which the devil and his followers would fight so much against this prayer to lure souls away from God.”  Our Lady would not have asked for this so much during each of her apparitions (see newsletter n°31) if it had not been one of the most efficient means, and all the apostles of the Rosary have taught that it is a formidable weapon against the devil.

This is why we can only encourage those who have trouble praying their Rosary to persevere in their determination to learn to say it well, by being convinced that it is the will of our Heavenly Mother, and that, if we don’t take to this prayer, it’s not because our Mother was mistaken, but because the devil cleverly hides from us the essence and the power of this prayer.  We should not be put off by this difficulty.  In other domains, we know how to put up with problems to obtain a greater good.  For example, regarding our health, would we refuse a strong medication for an illness because it tasted bad?  We should therefore seek to have a great devotion to the Rosary and to spread this devotion as much as possible.

So, what can we do to help those who have trouble saying the Rosary?  Here are two suggestions:

  1. Those who are used to saying it should offer their Rosary for those of us who have problems with it.  We will form a little community and be committed to praying for each other even if we are dispersed throughout the four corners of the world.
  2. As for those with difficulties, there is a simple way to say the Rosary, but which requires, nevertheless, a little organisation:  applying the venerable Marie-Pauline Jaricot’s idea of the living Rosary.

As perhaps not all readers are familiar with Marie-Pauline Jaricot, here are a few elements regarding her life.  The youngest of eight children in a family from Lyon, Marie-Pauline Jaricot (1799-1862) was a laywoman, a member of the Dominican Third Order, declared venerable in 1963.  Strongly influenced by the spiritual disaster resulting from the French Revolution, she was motived by an ardent desire to spread the light of the Gospel and the grace of Redemption to all those who did not have, or no longer had, the Faith, with the help of prayer, in particular the Rosary. This idea led her to found, at Lyon in 1826, the Living Rosary because, she said, “this beautiful devotion [to the Rosary] has been left to professional devotees, and on condition that they be old or have nothing else to do:  which is a very false prejudice, and which, unfortunately, exists everywhere.  ( … )  What matters is to have the Rosary accepted by everyone.”  This is precisely our own preoccupation:  that the Rosary be appreciated by those amongst us who only say it with reluctance.

How did Marie-Pauline Jaricot go about this?  Realising that it was difficult for a lot of people to say fifteen decades of Hail Marys, she encouraged them to begin saying the Rosary little by little.  She had the idea of forming volunteers into groups of fifteen, with each person committing to:  1) saying a decade of the Rosary each day and 2) meditating on the mystery which had been assigned to that person each month by drawing lots.

The fifteen associates are thus linked albeit invisibly, but in reality, in saying a Rosary between them every day.  And in fifteen months, each of them will have meditated on a full Rosary.  Despite initial difficulties (as with many good works), the Living Rosary was rapidly very successful.  Five years after it was launched, it crossed the frontier and spread throughout Italy, Switzerland, Belgium, England, and even America and Asia.  In 1834, in France alone, the organisation had a million members.

Pope Gregory XVI approved the Living Rosary in 1832, only six years after its beginning.  And on the 17th of August 1877, by the brief Quod jure haereditario, Pope Pius IX placed it under the immediate jurisdiction of the Master of the Order of Preachers.  Thus, the Living Rosary, after only fifty years, became completely recognised and recommended by the Church.  It was enriched with indulgences.  For example, each member received, every day, the indulgence pertaining to the complete recitation of the Rosary.  And the indulgence is gained even if, sometimes, one or other of the associates happens to forget to fulfil his obligation.

In this way, the Living Rosary spread to people of all backgrounds, particularly children, as an initiation to the Rosary, and to people who were isolated and to whom it brought much spiritual comfort, as they felt part of a real community.  This, then, is the Living Rosary, and how it came about.

It can sometimes be difficult to find 14 others to make up 15 people to form a Living Rosary.  But it’s not impossible to find 4 others to make up a group of 5 to constitute what we could call a “living chapelet”.  [A chapelet is the recitation of five decades of Hail Marys whilst meditating either the joyful, sorrowful or glorious mysteries.]  This seems all the more legitimate in that, at Fatima, the Holy Virgin only asked for the daily recitation of the chapelet.  Moreover, it is relatively easy to transform this living chapelet into a living rosary over three days.  For this, all that needs to be done is to organise which mysteries should be recited on which day so that after three days a full Rosary has been said.  It’s also possible to join with two other ‘living chapelets’, so as to form a living Rosary:  simply organise the groups a little by dividing up the mysteries to be said.

Perhaps some people will raise the objection:  “It’s too easy!  How is it that those who only say a decade of the Rosary each day can receive as much as those who have recited a full Rosary?”  At first sight, this is indeed astonishing, but it’s in perfect conformity with divine economy.  Did not the workers of the eleventh hour receive as much as those of the first hour?  It pleases God to give as much to fifteen people who, together, have said a Rosary by saying only a decade each day, as to those who say a full Rosary:  are we going to be “evil because God is good”? (Matthew 20:15)  And did Jesus not praise the intelligence of the dishonest steward?  But the intention of Marie-Pauline Jaricot was not to be dishonest.  On the contrary, she had the intelligence to imagine a means of leading people in an organised way to, little by little, saying their Rosary, beginning with the recitation of only a decade.

Moreover, this practice is drawn from several of Our Lord’s words, particularly:  “Again I say unto you, That if two of you shall agree on earth as touching any thing that they shall ask, it shall be done for them of my Father which is in heaven.  For where two or three are gathered together in my name, there am I in the midst of them.”  (Matthew 18:19-20)  And in a commentary on this passage, Saint Thomas Aquinas affirms:  “It is impossible that the prayers of a multitude are not granted if these numerous prayers form but one.”  This is precisely wherein lies the efficacity of the Living Rosary:  the prayers of many become one prayer.  With a living chapelet, five people are united by the recitation of a mystery every day to obtain the graces associated with this.  And Our Lord Himself has affirmed that, in this case, our prayers will be granted.

The two means of spreading the daily recitation of the Rosary that we have just proposed are doubtless not the only means possible.  Everyone is free to choose the way he prefers according to his tastes and the qualities which God has bestowed upon him.  But, we must do something!  We should put in place concrete means for learning to say the Rosary well, to spread it around us, to say it every day for the love of Our Lady, in order to respond to her unceasing request so as to obtain the conversion of sinners and peace in the world.

However, Marie-Pauline Jaricot’s idea was recommended by the Church and in six years it succeeded in having more than a million people in its Living Rosary.  So her example deserves to be followed, or at least to serve as a guide for us.  We should pray that all those amongst us who have trouble saying the Rosary every day find four other people to form together a living chapelet and thereby respond more fully to the requests of our Heavenly Mother.

In union of prayer in the Immaculate Heart of Mary,
Yves de Lassus.

Nota:  To help with the organisation of living rosaries we are going to create a page on this website to facilitate this.  If you wish, you can already register on the page Living Chapelet.  Anyone can register including those who already say their chapelet every day, but would like to say an extra decade to take part in a living rosary.

N° 64 : Sacrifices asked for by Heaven

Newsletter n°64 (29 November 2017)

Dear friends,

During the conferences given throughout this centenary year, a question which came up frequently was “what is a sacrifice?” or more precisely “how do we make sacrifices?”.  This is an altogether legitimate question because during the second apparition of 1916, Lucia asked the Angel:  “How should we make sacrifices?”.  Moreover, these are the only words which Lucia spoke to the Angel during the course of the three apparitions of 1916.  The question is therefore important.  Even if it has already been discussed several times in these newsletters (see newsletters n°6, n°7 and n°58), it seems useful to go over it again.

Sister Lucia often insisted on this point.  “What is Our Lady’s main request?” John Haffert asked her on the 12th of August 1946.  Lucia replied:  “Sacrifice.”  Haffert continued, saying:  “And what do you mean by sacrifice? “  She summed up everthing Our Lady as well as Our Lord, had told her:  “By sacrifice, Our Lady said that She meant the loyal accomplishment by everyone of the daily duties of their state of life.” (see newsletter n°6)

N° 69 : Voluntary sacrifices (continued)

Newsletter n°69 (14 February 2018)

Dear friends,

Today is the beginning of Lent.  This is the time to decide which efforts we’re going to make over the next 40 days.  Newsletters n°64 and n°65 reminded us that the first sacrifices to make are those which we do not choose.  But the last newsletter also reminded us that the little seers added voluntary penances to everyday sacrifices.  If we want to imitate them, we can’t avoid doing as they did.  And Lent is the appropriate time for this.

But why is it useful for us to do voluntary penances?  Is not the offering of everyday sacrifices enough, because that is what Our Lord asked for?  We mustn’t forget that our nature was wounded by original sin and that this weakened our will.  Therefore, we have to exercise our will to make it stronger.  Because accepting everyday sacrifices, those we do not choose, sometimes demands unfailing willpower.  For example, which one of us has never found it difficult to put up, patiently, with someone annoying, whether it be a friend, a relative, a manager or a subordinate?  So, we have to exercise our willpower to cope with ordeals like these.  This is why we have to train like an athlete;  if we don’t, then when faced with an ordeal, we’ll give in.

N°70 : Prayers taught by Our Lady

Newsletter n°70 (28 February 2018)

Dear friends,

For the first Saturday of the month of March, we suggest:

  • meditating on the third joyful mystery, aided by the attached document, (only in french)
  • offering your communion of reparation for the third kind of blasphemy against the Immaculate Heart of Marie:  blasphemies against her Divine Maternity.

These blasphemies against the Holy Virgin are unfortunately very real.  We’ve recently seen a sad example on the programme presented by Daniel Morin and broadcast by France Inter on the 12th of February regarding the announcement of the recognition of the 70th miracle at Lourdes.  During the programme, the miracle of the healing of Sister Bernadette Moriau in 2008 was ridiculed in a truly odious, not to say blasphemous, way.  So offer our communion of reparation of this first Saturday of the month, on the one hand to repair the offense against our Heavenly Mother which constitutes this programme, on the other hand, for the conversion of the journalist who presented it.

Pray for the conversion of sinners

We should never forget to offer these first Saturdays of the month for the conversion of sinners.  Offering our prayers and sacrifices for the conversion of sinners is at the centre of the message of Fatima;  it was a constant preoccupation of the Angel and of Our Lady and they asked for this during six of the nine apparitions of 1916 and 1917.  Our Lady’s insistence is easy to understand.  After being created by God, at the moment a new, tiny being is conceived, a soul can then be in one of four states:  on earth in the body of this person until their death, and then in Heaven, Purgatory or hell.  But, souls in Heaven don’t need our prayers or our sacrifices, neither do those which are in hell, alas.  Those in Purgatory need our prayers and sacrifices to be able to enter Heaven more quickly, and God very much wishes this.  But there is no fear for their salvation:  they will go to Heaven anyway, even if we neglect to pray for them, which we should obviously avoid.  But souls on earth are free and can damn themselves;  their fate is not yet decided:  this will only be at the moment of their death.  But God wants all souls to be saved.  This is why Our Lady insisted so much that we pray especially for sinners so that they go to Purgatory if their life does not allow them to go directly to Heaven;  at least they avoid hell.

The fruits of the Rosary

We regularly receive very touching testimonies on fruits received following the practise of the devotion to the Immaculate Heart of Mary.  We recently received one which its author has allowed us to publish.  We do this very willingly to show you an example of the graces which this devotion can bring us:

The Rosary is a formidable weapon against the devil.  Yes, Our Lady accompanies us during its meditation and gradually enters into our hearts.  Yes, the Rosary said daily is a weapon of conversion for the poor sinners that we are:  I have experienced this personally since the 15th of August 2017.  Nothing is ever lost:  in following the teachings of Fatima, the Holy and Merciful Virgin picks us up because she loves us like a mother loves her children, all her children.  My faith does not cease to grow and my heart opens more and more to the Divine Love of the Holy Trinity and that of its sweet mother.  So we should continue together on this path of spirituality and meditate on the teachings of Fatima !

We hope you will be able to follow the same path.  But this can only be done with perseverance:  even if a whole Rosary seems really impossible for you say, at least try to pray one or two decades a day, then three, then four, …  And if you are still having trouble, think of asking Our Lady for the grace to love the prayer that she asks of us which such insistence.  You can do this by saying, for example, the prayer suggested in newsletter n°67.

Prayers taught by Our Lady

Many of you have enquired as to the exact phrase that Our Lady asked us to say after each decade of the Rosary.  The text of this prayer appears three times in the memoirs of Sister Lucia:  once in the third memoir written in August 1941 and twice in the fourth memoir written in December of the same year.  It is rigorously the same each time: «O meu Jesus !  Perdoai-nos, livrai-nos do fogo do inferno, levai as alminhas todas para o Céu, principalmente aquelas que mais precisarem. »  These are the words actually pronounced by Our Lady.

We have been able to consult five translations:  that of Father Alonso, s.j., of 1973, that of Father Simonin, o.p., of 1976, and the official translations given out by the sanctuary at Fatima in its editions of 1980, 2008 and 2013, namely 15 translations of the same text in all.  The sanctuary’s translations of 1980 and 2008 are exact reproductions of Father Alonso’s, then it adopts Father Simonin’s translation for its 2013 edition.

All the translations begin by:  “O my Jesus, pardon us, preserve us from the fires of hell.”  To the phrase generally used in France was added “our sins”, after “pardon us”.  But this addition changes absolutely nothing in the meaning of the sentence.  It is very common to say pardon us our sins, even though it is quite certain that it is only our faults or sins which can be pardoned.  In the ‘Our Father’, we say:  “Forgive us our trespasses”.

Next, Father Alonso translates the verb “levai” by:  “Take all souls to Paradise” in the third memoir, then by “Lead all souls to Paradise” in the fourth memoir.  As for Father Simonin, he translates it each time as:  “Draw all souls to Heaven”.  The 2013 edition of the sanctuary’s translation justifies this choice by indicating in a note:  “c.f. the word of Jesus: ‘And I, if I be lifted up from the earth, will draw all men unto me.’ (John 12:32)”  While it is praiseworthy to want to be as close as possible to our Lord’s word, the verb “levar” in Portugese actually means:  take, take away, lead, … So the translation of the verb “levai” by “draw” is a slight deviation from the common usage of the Portugese verb.  The translation “lead” seems to us to be more precise.

The end of the prayer is translated by “above all those most in need” by Father Alonso as well as the sanctuary’s three editions.  Father Simonin’s translation is practically the same except that “above all” is replaced by “mainly”.

The French way of saying it is slightly different:  “above all those most in need of Thy Divine Mercy”, with “above all” sometimes replaced by “especially”.  Be that as it may, the French version contains a second addition to the Portugese text.  But this addition does not in any way change the meaning of the prayer!

These two additions in the French version are quite legitimate.  In fact, prayers taught by Heaven have already more than once been slightly modified by a saint or by the Church.  The Rosary was enriched in this way by the Church and by Saint Louis Marie Grignion de Montfort.  And no-one would dream of saying the “Hail Mary” as it was said at the time of Saint Dominic or Saint Thomas Aquinas.

Likewise, to the prayer:  “O Jesus, it is for the love of Thee, for the conversion of sinners and in reparation for the offences committed against the Immaculate Heart of Mary” Jacinta added “… and for the Holy Father.”  A slight modification which respects Our Lady’s intention and the meaning of her words is therefore possible.  This is why the slighty modified version used in France is perfectly acceptable.

In a translation, it is always difficult to reconcile the literal, word-for-word sense of the text with an interpretation of its overall meaning.  Which is best?  It’s a question often asked by experts, and anyone who has to translate texts from one language to another.  A literal translation is not always a faithful rendering of the spirit of the original text.

Ideally, the best version would be that of Father Alonso.  But we can’t ignore common usage.  But the two additions in the French version change absolutely nothing of the meaning.  Therefore, it seems that the best option for France, given that the habit has already been acquired, is “O my Jesus, forgive us our sins, save us from the fires of hell, lead all souls to Heaven, above all those most in need of Thy Divine Mercy.”  Be that as it may, never forget to say this prayer after each decade of the Rosary, as well as the prayer “O Jesus, it is for the love of Thee, etc.” after each sacrifice.

In union of prayer in the Immaculate Heart of Mary,
Yves de Lassus

N° 68 : Voluntary Sacrifices

Newsletter n°68 (31 January 2018)

Dear friends,

This Saturday being a first Saturday of the month, you will find, as from now on with each newsletter diffused just before a first Saturday of the month, a meditation.  This month it is on the 2nd Joyful Mystery.

These meditations are purposefully somewhat long, so that they can be used by everyone.  It’s not necessary to read everything.  They are only a support to help us meditate well for a quarter of an hour.  Some of you who find meditating difficult, will want to read it all;  others will only read a few paragraphs and reflect on them for the rest of the time.  So there is no obligation to read to the end of the proposed text.  What matters, is to meditate for 15 minutes on a mystery of the Rosary.

This Saturday, we propose offering our communion for the second kind of blasphemy against the Immaculate Heart of Mary:  blasphemies against her virginity.

Consecrations to the Immaculate Heart of Mary

On the 2nd of February, there will still be many people who are going to consecrate themselves to the Immaculate Heart of Mary and receive the scapular of Our Lady of Mount Carmel.  Pray for them.  Amongst them are people in very delicate situations and for whom Our Lady is the last recourse.  May this consecration be for them a source of grace and bear much fruit.

Daily recitation of the Rosary

Following the last newsletter about the Rosary, we have received some lovely testimonies, in particular:

N° 63 : The conflagration in the sky of January 1938 (continued)

Newsletter n°63 (17 November 2017)

Dear friends,

The conflagration in the sky on the evening of the 25th of January 1938 (see previous newsletter) is a point which risks troubling the advancement of the process of Sister Lucia’s beatification.  The diocesan enquiry solemnly closed on the 13th of February 2017 at the Carmel of Coïmbra, and a file of several thousands of pages was sent to the Congregation for the Causes of Saints at the Vatican.  However, the Carmelite Father Romano Gambalunga o.d.c., Postulator leading the cause, calls for patience and prudence so as not to anticipate the Church’s decision.  He emphasized that Sister Lucia “became saintly over the years, not because of the apparitions”, but through “the spiritual experience” of the religious life at the Carmel of Coïmbra.  Such a remark is astonishing.  For what reasons were her cousins Francisco and Jacinta, who had not had the spiritual experience of a religious life, canonised?  Why cannot Lucia be canonised for the same reasons, as she experienced the same events as her cousins and whose  ordeal was greater than theirs as her family gave her absolutely no support, quite the contrary?  Between the deaths of Francisco and Jacinta and her entry into Carmel, were there elements in the life of Lucia which would prevent her canonisation?

N° 62 : The conflagration in the sky of January 1938

Newsletter n°62 (30 October 2017)

Dear friends,

With regard to exceptional phenomena occurring before the miracle of the sun, a friend has kindly pointed out that it would be more accurate to count four, rather than three (see newsletter n°12).  For the crossing of the Red Sea by the Hebrews, pursued by the Egyptians, is also a phenomenon which defies the usual laws of nature and which took place over dozens of miles (the Red Sea has an average width of around 125 miles) and was witnessed by several thousands of people.  Be that as it may, there were three or four phenomena of this kind before our time, phenomena unique in the history of mankind and which characterise an intervention by the Creator of the universe, Who alone can modify the laws of nature.

Moreover, concerning Fatima, it can be said that there were not one, but two exceptional miracles which authenticate the apparitions:  the great Miracle of the Sun on the 13th of October 1917 and the miracle of the conflagration in the sky during the night of the 25th to the 26th of January 1938.  These two miracles of an exceptional nature also have an added bonus:  both of them were predicted, three months beforehand for the former, and the latter, twenty months beforehand.

N° 61 :The great miracle of the 13th of October 1917

Newsletter n°61 (13th of October 2017)

Dear friends,

We have now reached the one hundredth anniversary of the apparition of the 13th of October 1917.  This is a particularly significant date in the history of mankind, as a phenomenon defying all known laws of nature occurred:  the miracle of the sun which took place that day has no equal whatsoever in all of history.  Before this, there were only three similar phenomena defying the laws of nature:  the Flood, the Sun Standing Still during Joshua’s battle against the Amorites at Gibeon (Joshua 10:12-13) and the Darkness of Good Friday.  This miracle proves that there was a divine intervention, as neither men nor demons can play with the laws of nature in this way.  (See newsletter n°12)

The Miracle of the Sun is often contested and many are those who have sought, and still seek, a natural explanation for the phenomenon.  It has to be said that no observatory, in particular that at Lisbon, recorded any modification whatsoever in the sun’s movement that day.  Yet 70,000 people affirm that they saw the sun dance.

N° 60 : Mary, Mediatrix of All Graces

Newsletter n°60 (3 October 2017)

Dear friends,

The dialogue during the apparition on the 13th of September, as reported by Lucia in her fourth memoir, does not include all of Our Lady’s words.  In fact, Lucia never claimed that her memoirs were a comprehensive account of the apparitions.  Thus, certain facts are only known to us through the initial interrogations, facts which Sister Lucia did not always judge necessary to include in her memoirs.

In this regard, Father De Marchi, a missionary of the Consolata of Turin, who exercised his ministry at Fatima for about ten years, did something very precious:  during the course of his stay there, he gathered statements from witnesses (most of them illiterate) to the apparitions, statements which he put together in a very important book:  Era uma senhora mais brilhante que o sol.  (Title of the French edition: Témoignages sur les apparitions de Fatima).  Here is what he reports regarding the apparition on the 13th of September.  We only quote the part concerning the dialogue with the Holy Virgin, but the chapter relates numerous details on the phenomena which accompanied the apparition that day.  This apparition was one which combined the greatest number of visible and audible signs of the presence of the Holy Virgin (see newsletter n°10).

N° 59 : The insistence of Lucia and the Popes on the recitation of the Rosary

Newsletter n°59 (17 September 2017)

Dear friends,

On the 13th of September 1917, for the fifth time, the Holy Virgin beseeched:  “Continue to say the Rosary to bring about the end of the war”.  Our Lady’s insistence on the recitation of the Rosary is remarkable (see newsletter n°31).  It is naturally found with Sister Lucia who, throughout her whole life, insisted on the importance of this prayer.  Here is what she wrote to one of her nephews, who was a priest, on the 29th of December 1969:

What a few confused people have spread about against the recitation of the Rosary is false.  The light from the sun is older than the recitation of the Rosary, and they don’t want to stop benefitting from its éclat;  the psalms are older and they too, like the prayers which make up the Rosary, are part of sacred liturgy.

The repetition of Ave Marie, Pater Noster and Gloria Patri is the chain which raises us up all the way to God and attaches us to Him, enabling us to participate in His Divine Life, just as the repetition of the mouthfuls of bread with which we nourish ourselves keep us alive;  and we don’t call that something outmoded !  This confusion (saying that the Rosary is out of date) is diabolical.  Don’t let yourself be taken in.

This, also, is what she wrote to another nephew who was a priest too (letter dated 4 April 1970) when giving him some advice for his apostolate:

N° 58 : Sacrifices for the conversion of sinners

Newsletter n°58 (28 August 2017)

Dear friends,

On the 19th of August 1917, Our Lady did not simply ask that we pray for the conversion of sinners (see previous newsletter), she said:  “Pray.  Pray very much and make sacrifices for sinners.”  If we want to save sinners from hell, we should not therefore only pray, but we should also make sacrifices for them.

This was the fourth time in the history of Fatima that we had been asked to make sacrifices for sinners.  During the apparition in the summer of 1916 the Angel had already said:  “You must offer your prayers and sacrifices to God, the Most High.”  Lucia then asked him:  “How are we to sacrifice?”  And the Angel replied:  “In every way you can, offer a sacrifice to God in reparation for the sins by which He is offended and in supplication for the conversion of sinners.  ( … )  Above all, bear and accept with patience the sufferings God will send you.

On the 13th of May 1917, Our Lady asked the little seers:  “Will you bear all the sufferings God sends you, in atonement for all the sins that offend Him, and in supplication for the conversion of sinners”, an almost identical expression to that of the Angel.

N° 57 : Pray. Pray very much.

Newsletter n°57 (14 August 2017)

Dear friends,

The fourth apparition of Our Lady at Fatima, the centenary of which we celebrate at this time, is original in more ways than one.  First of all, it took place in two stages.  There was a first manifestation on the 13th of August 1917, but without the children, who were in prison at Villa Nova de Ourem.  It is a kind of “apparition without seers”, an event unique in the history of the Church, as 18,000 witnesses were able to observe at the given time the same exterior phenomena as those seen during the preceding apparitions (see newsletter n°8).  Then there was a second manifestation on the 19th of August in the presence of the children alone.  However, the signs of Our Lady’s presence were perceived by Teresa, Lucia’s sister, and Teresa’s husband, although they were two kilometres away from the site of the apparition and had no reason to expect it, given that it was neither the day of the month nor the hour of the previous apparitions (see newsletter n°9).

The message delivered by Our Lady that day was very brief but it is particularly dense and important.  It consists of two short sentences:  “Pray, pray very much and make sacrifices for sinners.  Many souls go to hell because they have no-one who will make sacrifices and pray for them.”  The first sentence repeats almost word for word what the Angel had said the previous year:  “Pray, pray very much !  (…)  You must always offer your prayers and sacrifices to God, the Most High.”  The verb “pray” appears seven times during the course of the apparitions:  it is used four times by the Angel during the spring and summer of 1916 (see newsletter n°25), then three times by the Holy Virgin during the apparition of the 19th of August 1917.  Moreover, the Angel and Our Lady taught four prayers to the little seers, and Our Lady asked for the daily recitation of the Rosary six times (see newsletter n°31).  Therefore, there is a real insistence on the necessity for praying, which recalls the teachings of the Gospel.  In particular, Our Lord asked that we “pray always” (Luke 21:36);  and after Our Lord, Saint Paul said:  “Pray without ceasing.” (1 Thes. 5:17)

N° 56 : The third part of the secret

Newsletter n°56 (31 July 2017)

Dear friends,

The last newsletter gave a brief overview of the history of the secret up until 1941, when, at the request of Mgr. da Silva, Lucia wrote it down twice, as it figures in her third and fourth memoirs, dated August and December 1941.  Despite this, the seer did not reveal all and kept to herself the third part of the secret.  After some hesitation, Sister Lucia obeyed at the beginning of January 1944, having received confirmation from Our Lady that it really was the good Lord’s will.  She passed it on to her bishop in a sealed envelope in June.

This revelation of the secret is, in itself, a precious teaching.  It underlines the authority conferred by God on His representatives on earth. « And whatsoever thou shalt bind on earth shall be bound in Heaven: and whatsoever thou shalt loose on earth shall be loosed in Heaven » Jesus said to his apostles (Mat. 16:19 and 18:18).  Across the centuries it can be seen that God has always kept this promise.

Obedience to legitimate superiors, when they are within the realm of their responsibility, is one of the qualities dearest to our Father in Heaven.  One of the most beautiful examples (and which is far from being unique) is that of Saint Margaret Mary.  Our Lord gave her the mission of spreading the devotion to the Sacred Heart;  but her superiors prevented her from doing this.  She asked what she should do about this to Our Lady who replied: « I am happy for you to choose your superiors’ will over mine when they forbid you to do that which I have decreed you do. »

N° 55 : The great secret of July 13th 1917

Newsletter n°55 (17 July 2017)

Dear friends,

Just one hundred years ago, Our Lady confided the great secret of the 13th of July to three little seers from Fatima.  It’s a long story and, moreover, a story which has not yet ended because since the publication of the text issued by the Vatican on the 26th of June 2000 which purports to be the third part of the secret, discussion between the experts is still very lively regarding its authenticity.

The secret character of this part of Fatima’s message underlines its importance and gives it a special place within the rest of the message.  Therefore, it seems to us indispensable to take another look at it.

Since the beginning, there was never any doubt that there was a secret.  Villa Nova de Ourem’s administrator went so far as to threaten to kill Lucia and her two cousins if the little seers did not reveal this secret.  Extraordinarily, the three children, although very young, preferred to choose death rather than give away their secret.  As far as we know, throughout the history of mankind, there has been no other example of such heroism in children so young.  By itself, this fact is already proof of extraordinary authenticity.  Add to this the miracle of the dancing sun prophesised three months before the event and there is no doubt whatsoever about Lucia’s honesty and, consequently, the existence of this secret.

N° 54 : The prophecies within the secret

Newsletter n°54 (28 June 2017)

Dear friends,

There is a criticism regularly made concerning the secret of Fatima.  Because the secret was only written down in 1941, Sister Lucia is often accused of having made prophecies post eventum (after the event), particularly concerning the blazing sky during the night of the 25th to the 26th of January 1938.  If it is true that Sister Lucia dreamed up a prophecy of Our Lady after this night, then the whole message of Fatima would be concerned and its truth seriously questioned.  Sister Lucia would then be a liar, or at best, a storyteller.  Moreover, it is very important to have the assurance that she did not make up this secret, and that it really is Our Lady who communicated it to her in 1917.  If this is not the case, the whole devotion to the Immaculate Heart of Mary as it is represented in the message and Sister Lucia’s writings would be an invention by Sister Lucia which should be rejected.

It is true that those who knew Sister Lucia well have always insisted that honesty was one of her principal qualities.  At the time of the apparitions, Lucia’s mother, convinced that her daughter was lying, used all means possible to make her go back on her affirmations.  But Lucia never retracted.  Even when Villa Nova de Ourem’s administrator threatened to throw her in a pot of boiling oil she did not refute her declarations.  This attitude, from a little ten year old girl, shows an essential honesty which is rare.  Why, after having been faithful to the truth to the point of risking her life, would she then invent a message without any outside pressure on her to do so?

N° 53 : The Immaculate Heart of Mary – the way to salvation

Newsletter n°53 (14 June 2017)

Dear friends,

Yesterday we celebrated the one hundredth anniversary of the second apparition of Our Lady at Fatima.  For many, this apparition is one of the most beautiful, as the message given by Our Lady on that day is truly of an exceptional beauty and richness, and which one never tires of contemplating:

Jesus (…) wishes to establish throughout the world the devotion to my Immaculate Heart.  To whomever embraces this devotion, I promise salvation.  These souls shall be dear to God, like flowers I have placed to adorn His throne. (…)  I will never abandon you.  My Immaculate Heart will be your refuge and the way which will lead you to God.

The richness of these words has already been commented on several times in the newsletters, notably in numbers 4 and 5, to show that this is really what Lucia wrote in her fourth memoir, and also in newsletter n°29, to show that it certainly was a question of the will of God Himself.

It was also during the course of this apparition that Our Lady appeared showing Her heart surrounded by thorns.  In her fourth memoir, Lucia said that “it was the Immaculate Heart of Mary, offended by the sins of mankind, which asked for reparation”.  All this makes up what Lucia called the little secret and which was only revealed in 1927 (see newsletter n°28).
