Most of us are convinced, without doubt, of the power of the devotion to the Immaculate Heart of Mary. Even so, during this period when rationalism reigns, it’s still useful to refresh our faith in this power with some concrete examples. The last newsletter gave us two : the consecration of a municipality in 1944 and the consecration of a parish in 1938. Some people complain that these are old examples, so here is one which happened less than ten years ago.
It is the story of the miraculous cure of Bertille, a little girl of thirteen months, the eighth child in a family from the north of France whose parents had consecrated themselves to the Immaculate Heart of Mary on the day of their marriage. This example is particularly convincing, because the cure in question was obtained following prayers addressed specifically and essentially to the Immaculate Heart of Mary. Here is a summary of the facts. (A more complete account given by Bertille’s father will be enclosed soon.)
During the course of the night of the 25th of March 2008, Bertille started to be sick. At daybreak, her lips began to turn blue. An ambulance was called and she was taken to pediatric emergency admissions, where she suffered a heart attack. She was saved in extremis but her condition was extremely worrying for the emergency room doctors, who diagnosed her with dilated cardiomyopathy. The parish priest was informed and arrived at the little patient’s bedside to administer the sacrament of confirmation, while her parents were kept in the waiting room, without any news.
By evening, Bertille was still alive, but her heart was almost unable to function. She was put on a drip and given breathing assistance. Despite this, her organs (kidneys, liver, brain) stopped spontaneously to relieve the burden on the heart, and Bertille fell into a coma. It seemed as if she was lost.
Straightaway, a prayer chain was started. Through internet, it was directed to the whole world : Vietnam, North and South America, China, the Maghreb. Everyone was asked to appeal, exclusively, to the Immaculate Heart of Mary. Bertille was in the general intensive care unit for a month, hanging between life and death. Then it was decided to try to withdraw the breathing assistance, a very delicate operation which nevertheless succeeded on the second attempt. She was at last able to leave general intensive care and was admitted to the pediatric intensive care unit, with a heavy treatment for her heart. A heart transplant was excluded, because she was too little. Despite this progress, she was still in trouble. Her heart was almost wasted and the cardiologist was very pessimistic.
After a month, Bertille seemed ready to leave the hospital. The month of June passed with many urgent alerts and finally Bertille had to go back into pediatric intensive care.
At the beginning of July, Bertille could once again leave hospital, still following a very heavy treatment. The following Saturday, which was a first Saturday of the month, the family went to Pontmain to undertake the devotion of reparation asked for by the Holy Virgin at Fatima. That day, something obviously happened, because the rest of the month of July passed quietly, without incident.
During a consultation at the beginning of August, Bertille’s pediatric cardiologist performed an ultrasound examination, during which he frowned and muttered, and which seemed to go on interminably. Her poor parents feared the worst. Then the doctor said : « We’ll stop all the treatment – her heart is perfectly normal ». « What do you mean, we stop everything ? The digoxin as well, which you said she’d have to take all her life, even if her condition improved ? ». « We stop everything. » Bertille was saved – she was completely cured. To this day, she has had no problems, in any of her organs.
A great many people have prayed for Bertille, some proposing the intercession of many and varied saints and mystics. But the family always asked for, sometimes with insistance, prayers exclusively to the Immaculate Heart of Mary. It can also be affirmed that this cure was obtained through the Immaculate Heart of Mary and by Her alone. And Our Lady chose a first Saturday of the month to cure Bertille.
May the example of this family encourage us to consecrate ourselves to the Immaculate Heart of Mary so that we may be protected, like Bertille, by the Holy Virgin. And we musn’t content ourselves with individual consecrations. They’re certainly very important. But the examples given in the last newsletter show that this protection can be extended to whole communities, particularly parishes and dioceses.
If these examples have convinced you, here is a simple four-point plan of action :
- For those who are not yet consecrated, make the decision to consecrate yourself and to register for one of the preparations on the site of Cap Fatima 2017 HERE. A preparation file HERE gives all the necessary instructions.
- Following the example of the testimony you’ve just read, communicate the particular graces that you have received after a consecration, so that we can show the power of the devotion to the Immaculate Heart of Mary.
- Be an apostle of this devotion by speaking about it to everyone around you, in your families, in your prayer groups, the organisations you belong to, etc.
- In particular, ask your priest to consecrate, or renew the consecration of your parish to the Immaculate Heart of Mary so as to receive the same graces of conversion that were given to the parish of Our Lady of Victories. (See the last newsletter.)
By your action, Our Lady’s protection will thereby spread throughout the land and fend off all the sicknesses, however deadly they may be, with which our country is currently afflicted.
In union of prayer in the Immaculate Heart of Mary,
Yves de Lassus,
President, Cap Fatima 2017.
