N° 31 : Pray the Rosary

 Newsletter n°31 – July 13th, 2016

Dear friends,

On July 13th, 1917, Our Lady repeated for the third time that the Rosary had to be recited every day. She will say it again during the three following apparitions. Thus, during all of the six apparitions of 1917, Our Lady will ask (we can almost say “claimed”) the daily recitation of the Rosary.

  • May 13th, 1917: "Recite the Rosary every day in order to obtain peace for the world and the end of the war."
  • June 13th, 1917: "I wish you […] to pray the Rosary every day."
  • July 13th, 1917: "I want you […] to continue reciting the Rosary every day in honor of Our Lady of the Rosary, in order to obtain peace in the world and the end of the war, because only She can help you."
  • August 13th, 1917: "I want you to […] continue praying the Rosary every day."
  • September 13th, 1917: "Continue to pray the Rosary in order to obtain the end of the war."
  • October 13th, 1917: "May you continue always to pray the Rosary every day."

This request is the only one that has been made during each apparition: that is why it is particularly important, because this insistence is probably not fortuitous. Besides, from the third apparition, the Holy Virgin will always speak about Our Lady of the Rosary:

  • July 13th, 1917: "I want you […] to continue reciting the Rosary every day in honor of Our Lady of the Rosary."
  • August 19th, 1917: "Our Lord will come to bless the people. Our Lady of the Rosary and Our Lady of Sorrows will come also. […] It will be for the Feast of Our Lady of the Rosary. What is left over will help towards the construction of a chapel that is to be built."
  • September 13th, 1917: "With half of the money received so far, they should make litters and carry them on the Feast of Our Lady of the Rosary; the other half can be used to build the chapel."
  • October 13th, 1917: "I am the Lady of the Rosary."

Finally, the three scenes that the Holy Virgin showed to the young sighted children during the dance of the Sun of the last apparition, illustrate the three mysteries of the Rosary: the Holy Family for the joyful mysteries, Our Lady of the Sorrows for the sorrowful mysteries, and Our Lady of the Rosary with the features of Our Lady of the Mount Carmel for the glorious mysteries.

On the one hand, Fatima is the confirmation of the daily Rosary as a prayer favoured by Heaven, after the Holy Mass, on the other hand Our Lady of the Rosary as the special name of the Holy Virgin. That is why during all her life, Sister Lucy didn’t stop insisting on the importance of the daily recitation of the Rosary. For example, here is what she wrote to one of her friends, Mother Maria José Martins, on September 16th, 1970:

The prayer of the Rosary is, after the Sacred Liturgy of the Eucharist, what unites us the most to God through the richness of the prayers which compose it, all coming from Heaven, dictated by the Father, the Son and the Holy Ghost. […] So the prayer of the Rosary, after the Liturgy of the Most Holy Eucharist, is what most introduces us to the intimate mystery of the Most Holy Trinity and the Eucharist; what most brings us to the spirit of the mysteries of Faith, Hope and Charity. The prayer of the Rosary is the spiritual bread of souls. […]The Rosary is what sustains the little flame of Faith that still has not been extinguished in many consciences. Even for those souls who pray without meditating, the very act of taking up the Rosary to pray is already a remembrance of God, of the Supernatural. A simple recollection of the mysteries of each decade is one more ray of light to sustain in souls the still smoldering wick. This is why the devil has made such war against it ! (cf. http://www.1260.org/Mary/Apparitions_Fatima/Fatima_Letter_Lucia_to_Martins_1970-09-16_en.htm)

We can find similar expressions in a letter written to father Pasquale two months later, on November 26th, 1970:

The decline of the world is probably due to the lack of the spirit of prayer. It was to prevent that disorientation that the Virgin recommended, with so much insistence, the recitation of the Rosary. It is because the prayer of the Rosary is, after the Holy Mass, the most able to preserve and increase the faith in the souls, that the devil unleashed against him the war we know.

We deeply incite the readers to discover and read those two letters to become aware of the great importance Sister Lucy attached to the Rosary, importance that she learnt from Our Lady herself. They really must be meditated to understand that the daily recitation of the Rosary is the universal remedy to all the evils.

However, some people don’t hesitate to criticize it, because they find it repetitive, annoying, outdated… We are not going to answer to this critics, because a lot of people have ever answer to it with talent. (in particular, see the remarkable Peguy’s poem about the Rosary).

Above all, such reproaches should be directly expressed to Our Lady herself. Why did she always insist so much on the recitation of the Rosary (rue du Bac, La Sallette, Fatima)? Why did she appear so many times with a Rosary in her hands (Lourdes, Beauraing, Banneux…)? Accepting as true the critics of those who denigrate the Rosary, would be equivalent to tacitly recognize that the Holy Virgin misled, and with her numerous authorities in the Church! That is quite difficult to believe. Leon XIII wrote more than ten encyclical letters about the Rosary. Saint Pius X, in his will, didn’t hesitate to write: “If you wish peace to reign in your home and in your homeland, recite the daily Rosary with your family: the Rosary is a perfect summary of the Gospel, and it give peace to everyone who recite it… Like the Rosary, recite it every day.” Such a statement in a text as important as a will, moreover a will of a canonized Pope, reveals an exceptional importance. Besides, I is extraordinary to notice the similarity if Saint Pius X’s words and Our Lady’s ones in Fatima, as if Our Lady wanted to confirm the words of the Holy Father.

More recently, father Gabriele Amorth, exorcist priest of the diocese of Rome, in the introduction of his last book Il mio rosario (Ed. San Paolo, Italy), wrote: « I believe that the Rosary is the most powerful prayer. He reveals he found the origin of his inner strength in the daily recitation of the Rosary, a prayer that supported him in his daily fight against the manifestations of the evil he tackled during many years. And father Amorth underlines the role of the Immaculate Heart of Mary to convert the world: “This book is dedicated to the Immaculate Heart of Mary, from which depends the future of our world. »

To conclude, here is a page which, in spite of its childish aspect, perfectly illustrates this power of the Rosary (only in french at that time): Clic here . So, for our salvation, for the recovery of our country, for the conversion of the sinners, for the peace in the world, let us be assiduous in the daily recitation of our rosary.

In union of prayer in the Immaculate Heart of Mary,
