N° 41 : The Popes’ Consecrations of Russia

Newsletter n°41 (14 December 2016)

Dear friends,

Two distinct requests were made by Heaven regarding the consecration of Russia :  the first in 1929 and 1930 by Our Lady (see newsletter n°39) ; then, as the Pope had not reacted, a second by Our Lord, which was easier, but bearing different fruits (see newsletter n°40).

The conditions associated with these two consecrations are also different.   Through Alexandrina da Costa, Our Lord asked only for a consecration by the Pope.  On the other hand, Our Lady added several conditions to her request which we know about through the letters of Sister Lucia to her confessor.  On the 29th of May 1930 she wrote to him :

The good Lord promises to end the persecution in Russia if the Holy Father deigns, and orders all the bishops in the world to likewise undertake a solemn and public act of reparation and the consecration of Russia to the Most Holy Hearts of Jesus and Mary, His Holiness promising that in return for the end of the persecution, to approve and recommend the practice of the devotion of reparation.

Two weeks later she again wrote to her confessor, repeating word for word the request expressed in her previous letter.  Father Gonçalvès himself informed Pope Pius XI of this.

Later, Sister Lucia specified how the bishops could participate.  On the 21st of March 1982, the apostolic nuncio of Portugal, Monseigneur Sante Portalupi, visited Coïmbra accompanied by the bishop of Leiria, Monseigneur do Amaral, and by M. Cardoso de Lacerda, the honorary president of the Eucharistic League.  He questioned Sister Lucia who gave him the details of the conditions in which the consecration should be made :

So that the bishops of the world be united with him for the consecration of Russia to the Immaculate Heart of Mary, the Pope should convene all the bishops in Rome, or elsewhere, at Tuy, for example, or else order all the bishops of the world to organise, each one in his own cathedral, a public and solemn reparation and consecration of Russia to the Most Holy Hearts of Jesus and Mary.

To the second solution, which she preferred, she added :

Some bishops will make the consecration by day, others in the night during the course of a prayer vigil.  (… )  If communist governments prevent Catholic bishops from performing these public and solemn ceremonies, then those prelates can undertake the consecration in small chapels.  And if the Pope’s order does not reach certain bishops because of a lack of religious freedom, the good Lord will understand as He wants the moral unanimity of the bishops, not necessarily the arithmetical total.

By the way, note that the terms employed by Sister Lucia clearly indicate that in March 1982, the date of the interview, the consecration had still not been made as Our Lady had requested.

The Holy Virgin asked the Pope :

1) to order the bishops throughout the world,
2) to consecrate, with him,
3) Russia,
4) to the Immaculate Heart of Mary,
5) with a public act of reparation
6) and promising to recognise the devotion of reparation for the first Saturdays of the month.

For His part, Our Lord simply asks for the consecration of the world to the Immaculate Heart of Mary by the Pope alone, without any other condition.

Since Our Lady’s request, we can count eight acts realised by the popes :  three by Pius XII, one by Paul VI, and four by Jean-Paul II.  Here is how each of these acts fulfills the conditions specified by Our Lady (diagram taken from the book by Joseph de Belfont, Mystères et vérités cachées du troisième secret de Fatima, Nouvelles Éditions Latines, October 2016, p.183) :

Note 1 :  Paul VI gave no order to the bishops.  Jean-Paul II simply said that he made his act « in spiritual union » with the bishops.
Note 2 :  The term used during these acts is ‘’commit’’ and not ‘’consecrate’’.
Note 3 :  The phrase used by Pius XII est :  « especially to those (peoples) who profess a particular devotion towards you and where there is no house in which your venerable icon is not venerated ».  Those used by Jean-Paul II are :  « nations which particularly need this offering and this consecration » and «  the peoples for whom You expect from us their offering and consecration ».

We see that not one of these eight acts fulfills the six conditions asked for by Our Lady.  In particular, there is neither act of reparation nor promise to approve the devotion of reparation of the first Saturdays of the month.

On the other hand, most of these acts fulfill the conditions asked for by our Lord.  And it is true that these acts have borne the promised fruits : the end of the war in the case of Pius XII and the end of the persecutions in Russia and the fall of the Berlin Wall in the case of Jean-Paul II.

The framework of this letter does not allow a more detailed examination of the question.  For those wishing more information, we suggest reading the abovementioned book by Joseph de Belfont.

The first five Saturdays of the month in 2017

Beginning next month, we suggest practising the first five Saturdays of the month together, in order to thoroughly prepare for the centenary.  Two series are proposed :  the first from January to May to celebrate the centenary of the first apparition of Our Lady, and the second from June to October to celebrate the last apparition in 1917.

Each Saturday will be specially consecrated to the reparation of one of the five offenses committed against the Immaculate Heart of Mary :  in January and June, those committed against Our Lady’s Immaculate Conception ;  in February and July those committed against Her Virginity ;  in March and August, those committed against Her Divine Maternity ;  in April and September, those which instill hatred of our Immaculate Mother in the hearts of children ;  finally, in June and October those against Her holy images.  For the first series, we propose meditating on the five Sorrowful Mysteries, and for the second series on the five Glorious Mysteries.

One week before each first Saturday, you will receive a 15 minutes meditation (in french) on a mystery of the Rosary as well as a reminder of the offenses against the Immaculate Heart of Mary.  You can register now on the website at this page :
